Endoscopic Observation of Tissue by Narrowband Illumination

We propose a new illumination method for a medical endoscope: narrow band imaging (NBI), in which the spectral bandwidth of the filtered light is narrowed. To confirm how the spectral specifications of the filtered light influence a reproduced image, an experiment was conducted observing the endoscopic images of the back mucosa of a human tongue. In addition, the effect of NBI on endoscopic images was investigated through preliminary clinical tests in colonoscopy and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. It has been shown that NBI can enhance the capillary pattern and the crypt pattern on the mucosa. These patterns are useful features for diagnosing an early cancer.     

Construction of self-assembled monolayer terminated with N-heterocyclic carbene-rhodium(I) complex moiety

Functionalization of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of alkanethiolate with metal containing unit is one of the versatile methods to obtain functional surfaces such as heterogeneous catalysts. However, organic molecules that strongly bind to transition metals at SAM terminal are limited. Recently N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) such as cyclic diaminocarbenes have emerged as strongly σ-donating ligands forming a robust bond with broad spectrum of transition metals. In the present study, for the purpose of establishment of a new robust basement for heterogeneous metal catalysts, a SAM of the alkanethiolate terminated with NHC-rhodium(I) complex moiety was prepared by utilizing a newly designed disulfide molecule bearing NHC-metal complex terminals. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis and angle resolved XPS measurement revealed successful formation of the Rh-complex-terminated SAM on a gold substrate. Infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) analysis suggested that the linker methylene chains connecting the rhodium complex moiety and the gold surface are in a loosely packed structure. This unique chemical species, NHC, would be a promising candidate as a basement for the construction of functional surface.     

Malyngamide X: The First (7R)‐Lyngbic Acid that Connects to a New Tripeptide Backbone from the Thai Sea Hare Bursatella leachii

Malyngamide X ( 1 ), the first (7R)‐lyngbic acid connected to a new tripeptide backbone, was isolated from the Thai sea hare Bursatella leachii. The gross structure of 1 was established on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR and mass spectroscopic data. Combination of the NMR spectroscopic experiments with α‐methoxy‐α‐(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetic acid esters, 2,2,2‐trifluoro‐1‐(9‐anthryl)ethanol chiral solvating agent, and molecular mechanics of 1 and the synthetic molecular fragments allowed us to determine the absolute stereochemistry of all six stereogenic centers without hydrolytic degradation of the compound. Compound 1 displayed moderate cytotoxic, antitubercular, and antimalarial properties.     

Simulation of electron bunch generation by an ultrashort-pulse high-intensity laser-driven wakefield

Electron acceleration due to a wakefield excited by a ultrashort-pulse intense laser propagating through a finite-length underdense plasma layer is studied by two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. The electron energy distribution is analyzed for moderate to high intensity. For the electron density, where the pulse length is almost half of the plasma wavelength, dramatic changes of the density structure occur with cavity and bunch formation with an increase in the laser intensity, also leading to the appearance of a fast electron component well confined in phase space. The analytical form of the fast electron energy spectrum is also presented.     

A SAXS study of the nanometer scale hybrid structure of Si---Ti---C---O amorphous fibers

A small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) study was performed to reveal the nanometer scale hybrid structure of Si---Ti---C---O fibers prepared by the pyrolysis of polytitanocarbosilane. The SAXS profile for Si---Ti---C---O fibers is attributed to two different types of scattering entities: an anisotropic contribution from long filaments with diameters hundreds to thousands of Ångströms and an isotropic contribution from β-SiC fine clusters of about a nanometer in diameter. A drastic degradation in the tensile strength of the fibers is correlated to the characteristic variations in their long-and medium-range structure.     

Electron g-factor in a gated InAs-inserted-channel In0.53Ga0.47As/In0.52Al0.48As heterostructure

We report on electron g-factor in an InAs-inserted In_0.53Ga_0.47As/In_0.52Al_0.48As heterostructure. The gate voltage dependence of g-factor is obtained from the coincidence method. The obtained g-factor values are surprisingly smaller than the g-factor value of bulk InAs, and it is close to the bare g-factor value of In_0.53Ga_0.47As. The large change in g-factor is observed by applying the gate voltage. The obtained gate voltage dependence is not simply explained by the energy dependence of g-factor.     

Self-assembled DNA-conjugated polymer for novel DNA chip.

We developed DNA-conjugated polymer for DNA chip fabrication. A 30 mer probe DNA and disulfide bridges were covalently attached to the polymer side chain. The DNA-conjugated polymer can be specifically adsorbed on a gold substrate surface by a self-assembly technique. The interaction between fully matched DNA and DNA-conjugated polymer was investigated by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique. The DNA-conjugated polymer-modified gold surface highly recognized fully matched DNA, rather than unmatched DNA. Therefore, DNA-conjugated polymer can be used for novel DNA chip fabrication.     

Entropy production per site in (nonreversible) spin-flip processes

Entropy production per site in a (nonreversible) spin-flip process is studied. We give it a useful expression, from which a property stronger than affinity of the entropy production per site follows. Furthermore, quasi-invariance of nonequilibrium measures in the spin-flip processes is discussed via entropy production.
